On May 10, 1775, The Second Continental Congress met at The State House in Philidelphia for the first time. The Second Continental Congress was lead by John Hancock of Massachusetts. Other famous delegates include Thomas Jefferson of Virginia and Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania. On June 14 1775, The Second Continental Congress established the militia as The Continental Army. They elected George Washington to be Commander in Cheif of The Continental Army. The Continental Army would protect and represent the thirteen colonies.
On July 4, 1776 The Second Continental introduced the Declaration of Independence. This document declared that The United States was an independent country apart from Britain. The Second Continental Congress stopped meeting when The Articles of the Confederation were signed on May 1, 1781.
